Apollo Creed won in the first movie. They announced the judges' decision while he was calling out "Adrian!"
That's why it was the only good one.(Note that it won the Oscar for Best Picture that year. None of the sequels would even merit consideration.)
It wasn't about Rocky winning the fight, it was about him winning his dignity and the love of a good woman.

Actually, in the first "Rocky" film, Creed won by decision. You'll hear it announced right at the end of the fight (less than two minutes from the time the end credits start rolling).

In the first film, they both fight till the end. But Apollo wins because he was the champ. I think the point here was that Rocky actually went all the way with Apollo, when everyone expected him to lose. Apollo wants to fight him again in Rocky II because he is imbarassed that he didn't knock him out. Thats what I got out of it anyway. Great movie huh?

It was a draw, that is the reason why they had a rematch in number 2.
