Most colleges and universities on the east coast require the SAT, wheras the west coast will except either. You could take both, but they can be rather expensive (especially if you need to take it more than once and you are sending scores to more than 5 schools). I've heard students say that the ACT was easier than the SAT, but that could mean a lot of different things. So, I would find out what is required at the universities you are interested in attending and then go from there.

Neither is more important than the other. Just take the one that the schools you want to go to require. I'm on the West Coast. All the schools around here want the SAT. Some will take the ACT instead. I only wanted to take one test, so since they all take the SAT around here, that's the one I took.

Look into the colleges in your area. Then, take the one that they want you to take.

ACT American College Test
SAT Scholastic Aptitude Test

Both are similar. Most state colleges and universitites demand the ACT in the US. Many private colleges also require the SAT. They are alike in what they test, but the SAT knowledge base is also supposed to be an indicator of your chances of success in your first year of college based on pre-knowledge of the core college curriculum for freshmen. I usually encourage students to take BOTH tests if possible. They validate each other and in the circumstance you do poorly on one and well on the other, its an indication you just had a bad test day.

It completely depends on the university's requirements. Normally, more schools require the SAT. However, I went to a school that required only the ACT, so I had to take that one. You need to research your prospective schools to see which one, perhaps both, you need.

Take both. Schools have preferences; if you score way better on one test you can use that score for schools that accept both. The ACT is definitely easier - more facts - tends to measure more what you know, not so much abstract reasoning.
