Apparently, when playing with the ear or tugging, its a sign of nervousness or indecision.
Try and remember what the conversation was about. Had you asked them a question that they answered? Perhaps it wasnt' something they knew the answer to, or perhaps was uncomfortable answering.

In theater it often means that you can not be heard, and should speak louder.
In conversation it is sometimes a discrete way to say "someone else is listening in, so be careful about what you are saying".

It doesnt mean anything special i do it sometimes when people are talking to me just because i have nothing else to do! I just noticed i do it alot but there is no significance behind it...i just dont have anything else to do or know where else to put me hands. Dont sweat it its nothing major to give you a sign!

can mean a sign of sttraction or affection, or they are bored, or they are just pulling at thier ear for no reaosn, but usually attraction HTH
