It's not compulsory in the UK, but it is recommended, because if you do have it they can stop it being transferred to the baby, so it won't be born with HIV. Even if you think there's no chance you have it, you might as well have the test. They test for several other things at the same time, so it doesn't mean fewer blood tests even if you refuse this one! It's worth it for your sake and your baby's.
Is it really compulsory in some US states?? Talk about freedom of choice! And I thought WE lived in a nanny state!

When you get pregnant...and see a doctor... They will give you the choice (although it's not much of a choice they push you to take it)....to be tested for HIV....
Even if you are not pregnant or do not plan on becoming pregnant. You still need to get tested...To protect those that you may want to have sex with..

You dont HAVE to do anything, but it is the best for you and your baby. Im saying this from the UK where it is offered. If you are worried talk to someone qualified to advise. If you already know you are HIV positive get some good advice as there are drugs that can be given to your baby, safer ways of delivery and advice on care of your baby which will help ensure its health.
If you are worried because you think someone might take the baby they wont, it doesnt affect your fitness to parent, and if you are worried that someone might find out, dont, its against the law, doctor patient confidentiality and you could sue their **** off it they told anyone, so they wont.

Your doc will recommend it and I think it is the safest thing you can do for yourself and your unborn child. Many women are scared to do it but if it is and issue your not ready to get tested than don't.. Never do something that makes you feel out of place, This is your body and your unborn baby, no one has the right to tell you what and what not to do with either one......But Me I wouls face my fears and just get it done and over with.....Honey I get tested every six months Only because men these days dont care who you are they will give you anything rather they know they have it or not, Just be safe and get tested
Congrats on the new baby, I will Pray for you good luck

No one will force you to have this test, but it is advisable. I had it done even though I was pretty confident it would be negative, and it was! However, just on that slim offchance that it is a positive result, there are things that can be done to protect your baby during labour if the doctors know.
Just think of it as being one more bit of blood they have to take, along with all the other tests! It won't hurt and it will put your mind at rest, one way or the other.

no, you do not have to have an hiv test when you are pregnant. The doctor will ask you if you want to give your consent for one. Nothing states you have to do anything you dont want to.

It was required for all four of mine. Just let them do it. You need to know for the sake of the baby anyway. You would want to do everything in your power to help your child be born and stay healthy. So the doctors will need to know this. It is a simple blood test they will do along with many other tests they run on your blood at your first doctor visit.

With al 3 of mine they ran a full STD screening, inclusing HIV, just in case. I was under the impression it was standard.
