What is the current status of consumerism this holiday season?

I am a correspondent for my school paper and have been unable to find adequate sources of information on American consumerism, spefically in this 2006 holiday season.

At this point it appears to be running approximately 6% above last year. BTW consumerism is a generic term which really doesn't mean anything. I assumed you meant consumer spending.
