I try and do nice little things for my parents. They live 2.5 hours away from me so it's not easy and I sympathise with you as it makes things more difficult. How about taking them out for a meal? I'm in the UK and took my Mum to The Ritz for afternoon tea for Mother's Day but perhaps something like that would be good for your Mum and Dad? I spend time with my Dad during the year too - we are both F1 Grand Prix fans and travel to America to watch the race in Indianapolis so get to spend time together then which is nice. I've helped both parents get to grips with mobile phones (although they do struggle) and sell stuff for them on ebay. My husband works at a car dealership so gets them good deals on new cars! When parents get older they sometimes appreciate different things - help around the house etc. rather than money being spent on them. Time, effort, respect and love - if you show them that I'm sure they will be more than happy - tell them you love them.

My mom marks out like a red-assed monkey in heat over Thomas Kinkade art, so I took an old window out of a house, busted out the glass pieces, and filled the frames with 3 different matted Thomas Kinkade prints, and put mirrors in the other 3 frames. Then I used craft paints to give the entire window frame an antique, crackle finish. She freakin' lost her mind over it.

I stopped arguing with them so much and started looking at things from their point of view. I try to be more cooperative while asserting my independence of them but I spend as much time as I can with them. Lord knows what I'd do without them. Love them and show it as often as you can in the best way you feel.

My parents had a break-in at their house and the bastards stole all my mom's jewellery. So i bought her a silver diamond necklace to at least make up for some of it :-)

well my mom is dead, and as for my father, I stop asking him for money and he was more appreciative of the fact that I started taking care of myself and grew up I guess, he doesn't like gifts or anything of that nature he is very easy to please, I'm graduating from college in April of 2007 and we are throwing his birthday party along with my graduation and that is his present he claims...
