A Registered Nurse is someone who holds a license from their state to practice Nursing at that level. This lies between a Licensed Practical Nurse (different names in some states) and an Advanced Practice Nurse (the holder of a masters degree in nursing or someone who has completed extra training as prescribed by the State Board of Nursing).
A staff nurse is a job that is done by Registered Nurses, it is usually the first position that is taken by a nurse working in a hospital environment. Staff nurses work under charge nurses and supervise LPN's and nurses aides. There is usually one charge nurse per shift per unit in the hospital. The Unit is managed by a head nurse who usually works on day shift. The nurses within a given hospital are supervised by a director of nursing. They are a department head within the hospital.
Schooling can be a two year associate degree. A three year hospital based diploma program or a four year BSN degree from a collage. In general (with exceptions) the more education the more likely you are to rise in nursing management.
RN's start at anywhere from 14 to 23 dollars an hour depending on what state and city you are in.

Maybe 'staff nurse' is a stage before one can become a 'registered nurse'! I think you need to get a nursing degree!

I don't know, but I do know that the head nurse is the one with the dirty knees. I heard this joke from a nurse, so no insult intended.
