Raises red flags for me, but I don't know specific details of the incident. Ask them what specifically is wrong with the transmission and what needs to be replaced. At worst, spinning your tires might damage your differential in some vehicles. Allow them to do the body work but do not allow any transmission work until you have test driven the car and determined for yourself that it is not shifting right, or it's shifting hard, etc. There's no reason to fix something that ain't broke.
There really is no reason for it to be leaking fluid in this instance, as the damage would be internal, not as a blown seal/cracked housing unless you went over some large rocks during the skid. I would have them clean the "Crack" and start the car and allow it to idle, with you underneath the car observing. Within a minute, a minute and a half, as the transmission is warming up, if there is a true problem, you'll be able to see it for yourself. If you can't see a problem, I would look into local governing bodies regarding reporting this shop as disreputable, and let your insurance company know the scam they're trying to run if this was a shop recommended by your insurance company. Too many shops play on people's impression of cars, in that alot of people don't spend the time to educate themselves on how to spot a scam by understanding how cars operate.
Just to illustrate the idiocy of some of the kids in these shops, one of my radiator hoses was leaky so I went to have it replaced. (I live in a condo right now, can't do any maintenance on condo property... ugh.) Young fella about 19-21 walked in and told me my transmission fluid and filter needed to be replaced. I asked him why. He stated it was routine maintenance for an automatic. I asked him, just to make sure he wasn't confusing me with someone else, which car he was talking about, he said you have the green Saturn right? I told him, son, if you can find an automatic transmission in that vehicle, I'll pay you double usual shop cost. I drive standard.

definately get another opinion
If the shop you took it to is not a "transmission" shop, and the guy working on your car is above age 25, they know who they can scam by whet you tell them.If you know nothing about vehicles, then that would be evident in your correspondence with them.
Think about it, your tranny would have had to had a crack in the housing or something for this to be real. The tranny is held in place with rubber bushings, they let it bounce around a bit.Unless they can show you a crack in your tranny, or better yet wipe off the tranny fluid and run the car and see if it comes back, if it dosnt then it got there somehow other than leaking.
Scamming shop can charge a bundle for tranny work because it is a specialized area, if they are not transmission specialists then they have no place doing your tranny. With transmission work, the reason you pay such high costs is because they are specialists, the parts inside are not extra expensive or anything to drive costs up.My father in law was fired from his mechanic job because he wouldnt scam people.

i own a repair shop, and some of the newer transmissions are good but they wont take that type of treatment..most of them will give some if there put through a hard time, and if it has any age on it,,it can tear them out also,,you might want to have a transmission shop look at it ,and see if it actually done any damage to it,,if its low on fluid that will also cause it to do this,,but id get a professional opinion on it,just to be sure about it,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas/

spinning your tires would not inherently do something to the transmission. no count if it quite is a handbook, you will basically positioned on the take carry of quicker. If that's an computerized, you're able to desire to be utilising the only equipment selectors rather of D while interior the snow to evade extreme shifting. this additionally provides you greater effective administration.
