Alan Turing and Alonzo Church are each generally attributed as pioneering the first "theoretical" universal computers. They did not really invent a physical computer, but rather invented the field of computational theory with their thesises, which were slightly different in style, but generally considered to describe the same thing (Turing used Turing Machines and Church used algorithms). Explaining the intricacies of Theory of Computation really requires an undergraduate or graduate level course.

The Antikythera Device, hands down proof that more knowledge can be lost than gained over the centuries. And the internet arguably began as the telegraph (electric charges transmitted over wire) which came about by Samuel Morse's experiments at a cousin's house in Cherry Valley, NY c. 1847 (they have a local history website). Not Al Gore, (who invented the sky is falling).

But hey, wait a sec, is this a trick question? Actually according to mathematics, the abacus is the first computer and it was invented by the chinese.

A lot of people credit Charge Babbage - who invented the difference engine - with creating the first computing device. Certainly his principles underlie the way computers eventually worked.
