Ok, it depends a lot on your lifestyle. if you are out lots get a cat, or a small animal such as a guinea pig, rabbit or hamster, which require less looking after, which one you get depends on your house too-do you want an indoor pet? or an outdoor one? plus remember that while guinea pigs and rabbits can be inexpensive to buy you will have to feed them hay, fresh veg, and their food, so this can then mount up.
You could also get a bird, however remember that many birds can be expensive to buy and are not happy cooped up in a tiny cage all day, so make sure you have a room that it will be able to fly around in and exercise.
Or, if you have more money to spend, and more time get a dog. perhaps one of the smaller breeds, as they tend to be easier to look after.
Obviously though, it is all about personal preference, all animals if well looked after, make very responsive, loving pets. :)

try getting a lab or a golden retriever puppy if your living at home and not on campus during college. you could play with it, take it out while you exercise, and the puppy will be your best companion through out it's life. they are fun to be with and both types are nice, easily trainable dogs.
buy a kitten or save a cats life by adopting a cat at the SPCA if you are living on campus. cats are pretty and most are affordable, like tabbies and Maine coons. Maine coons are well behaved lap cats whop would be very kind o you. tabbies can be either- Nice or mean, so it's a toss up. be careful not to give into a cute kitten that may nip and go wild, so try getting an affordable Maine coon kitten if you want to buy a cat.
avoid buying a bird. as studies show, birds really shouldn't be in captivity like they are today in pet stores around the world. birds shouldn't be kept as pets because of their wild nature to lash out at their owners and peck at them and hurt them when they try to feed them. what bird really likes a cage anyway? birds aren't too friendly of pets either, and the same goes for lizards and snakes- most of them are mean and like to bites their owners, no matter how " harmless" they are said to be.
good luck with this!

I have always had cats and couldn't say anything that hasn't been said, but about 2 1/2 years ago I was "given" a couple of ferrets because their owner couldn't keep them and they were scheduled to be euthanized. I knew practically nothing about them, except that they have teeth like needles. To make a long story short, the only thing that prepared me for them was having brought up children. They have NEVER bitten me, they are possibly more intelligent than my cats,(certainly more than some dogs I've met,) and they absolutely worship my shadow. But you only get what you give...

Fish are easy to look after.
Dogs need alot of attention.
Cats can be more independant.
Remember though any animal is a long term commitment not just for a short while and they are expensive to look after especially cats and dogs. You need food, bedding, vet bills, toys and when you go anyway you need someone to look after the pet.

Try to find a pet that fits your life style. If you want something pretty low maintenance, mice, gerbils, hamsters, or rabbits could be good. If you will not be around a lot, a cat can be good, because they tend to not mind being on their own as much as a dog would.

Get a cat. I sound like louise.
They dont need looking after too much, just feeding and they need a liter tray....and they're the funniest animal ever!
Don't get a chihuahua...they're rats inbred with dogs.

Cats and dogs are great pets but, if you are looking for something a little smaller, birds are pretty terrific pets and their are so many to choose from.Hermit crabs are pretty cool too.

you are in a rough situation. first, you need to see how much money you got to spend on a pet first. Then my suggestion would be a dog or a young cat! lol
