I saw the year 1196 listed with other years that have historical significance, such as 476 AD, 1066 AD, etc. I saw this on a Jeopardy! promo in the 80's. Other people have suggested that the Magna Carta was signed in 1215, a "nearby" year, but this doesn't cut it for me.

Doesn't cut it for me either. It sure looks like a inconsequential year. You may note the arrest of Fritzobert of the House of Fritzobert for protesting the taxation for the rescue of Richard I. There also occurred the birth of someone called Svyetsoslov of Russia. I really don't see such events as changing the course of world history. I guess that Jeopardy is on to something not otherwise reported, or that they have a warped sense of events that make up historical significance.

Yes quite many things:

Innocence III is elected Pope. He is considered on of the founder , if not the founder , of the church as a political and earthly state.

Albigensian, heresy: The people from Albi (France) came up with a different idea of what and how was god. Innocence decides it is a Heresy and sends Simon de Montfort, a crusader, to destroy them. During the campaign the troops sent by the Pope, burn most of the inhabitants of Albi at the stake also destroy other similar or parallel religious groups, and hence maybe this was considered the first European crusade.

Struggle between the Guelph and Hohenstaufen parties or partidaries.– Henry the IV signs treaty with other German princes to choose his son Frederic, whose custody was awarded to Innocence III as the future emperor. Some groups do others don't and choose Oton, named Oton the IV and from here started a 10 year civil war in the German states.
