Merlin was the advisor to Arthur. Some say he was a magician, but he could have just been a wise man. Since Arthur was supposedly a Christian king, I doubt that he would have had a magician as his top advisor. Some say that "Merlin" was a title, not a name, and he could even have been St. David of Wales. If you want an interesting perspective on him, read The Crystal Cave series. It is told by him in first person, covering his life from the time he is a young boy to the end.

It is not sure that Merlin ever existed.First data about Merlin is from book "History of British kings" which was written around 1135. by great bishop Jeffrey of Monmouth.Jeffrey says that king Worthigan ordered a construction of an undestroyable tower on Mount Snowdawn, but the tower crashed a few times and some sidekicks said that if blood of a fatherless boy would be spilt on the foundations of the tower it wouldn't crash anymore. The fatherless boy was Merlin...Merlin proved that sidekicks were lying and discovered that there was water under the foundations of the tower.Merlin started to make omens which came truth and king Worthigan decided to spare his life.Later Merlin became Arthur's teacher. All this happened around 470.
Other stories say that Merlin was actually a Celtic bard called Mir din,who lived after 573.Jeffrey says that Merlin lived for more than 100 years!

Merlin is best known as the mighty wizard featured in Arthurian legend. The standard depiction of the character first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, and is based on an amalgamation of previous historical and legendary figures. Geoffrey combined existing stories of Myrddin Wyllt (Merlinus Caledonensis), a northern madman with no connection to King Arthur, with tales of Aurelius Ambrosius to form the figure he called Merlin Ambrosius.
Geoffrey's version of the character was immediately popular, and later writers expanded the account to produce a fuller image of the wizard. His traditional biography has him born the son of an incubus and a mortal woman who inherits his powers from his strange birth. He grows up to be a sage and engineers the birth of Arthur through magic. Later Merlin serves as the king's advisor until he is bewitched and imprisoned by the Lady of the Lake.
