While learning math, this is a tricky thing. It depends on what you decide is dependent.

For example, if you write y = x^2 + 3x - 17
then it is easy for someone to imagine that you meant y as the dependent variable: you can give x any value you want, the value of y will depend on which value you picked for x.

However, if you decide to solve that same equation by forcing a value for y and finding a solution for x, then x becomes the dependent variable. If that is what you had intended, you probably would have written the equation in a different form, such as x = ... (with only "y" terms on the right)

In real life, it gets easier. Causal effects usually determine which variable is dependent. For example, if y represents the growth of a plant in relation to the amount of rain in a month (x), then y is clearly the dependent variable: the growth y depends on the rain x, not the other way around.

The independent variable in an experiment is the variable for which you choose the value.

The dependent variable is the variable that takes its value automatically after you have chosen the independant variables. Usually these are the variables you are measuring.

The independent variable is the one that you change, the dependent variable changes in response to the change in the independent variable.

So, you can change and independent variable, but the dependent variable is a result of that, you cannot change it directly.

The 'x' value is independent, the 'y' value is dependent. The value of 'y' depends on, is determined by, the function used.
