Well, I just change my past, of course. :-) Note the sarcasm.

I've done a lot of stupid things, and now that I'm a little wiser, I have actually accepted my past. It's the reason I'm the way I am today, and good or bad, I can't resent what's happened because it was all part of the road to becoming the woman I am now.

Once I got past that, I figure I can use my past to pick fun at myself (which I do often) and try to help others. If I had no blemishes in my personal history, I couldn't really reach others who are in similar situations, since it's hard to take someone seriously if you know they've never been in your situation before. I guard what most people know about me, but I'm not afraid to talk confidentially about what I've gone through if I think it could be a means to reach out and help someone else.

Your post script about "family history" makes me wonder if you're even talking about your own wrongdoings, or do you have someone in your family (or several someones in your family) you're embarrassed by? Once again, there's nothing you can really do to change your family history, so try to accept it and change what YOU do to keep history from repeating itself in your own life.

its natural to be embarrassed about things relating to that especially when its family but the truth of the matter is that you cant change the past....what you can do is show the world that you dont live in the past.show them that you can make a difference.show them that you are not like your everyone else.
be a person that people can count on..no matter how hard you try the past can never go away so why dont you try looking at whatever happened as a learning experience...try to make the best of it....god never gives you what you cannot handle.....i believe that u r a strong person...just make the best of the situation.

Turn that embarrassment into compassion for others. I have that in my family too, but I have found out that practically everybody has someone in their family whose deeds are reprehensible.

Just knowing that should keep your head up, and allow you to encourage others who feel as you do.

Rise above it would be my guess. Rid the things you dislike and break the chain (like alcoholism, drug addiction, thieves, etc) whatever you may dislike. Make a conscience effort to not do as they did, live your life the Best Way you know how. You should only be judged by YOU and not your relatives, unless you act JUST like them.

I'm in the same boat as you. I simply don't talk about it. Honestly, when people ask me about my family I usually don't tell "the whole truth."
