When a transgender person has undergone sex assignment surgery, they physically resemble the sex of their choice ... a person born male looks female, and is therefore visablly female. To put a person who appears female in jail with men would be dangerous.. so legal status should reflect physical status.

or.. A transgender person believes themselves to be, in every way but physically, the opposite of the sex assined at birth.. therefore, revising the certificate is more 'accurate' as to his or her total make-up. (A penis does not make a man).

or... in a compassionate civil society such as ours what purpose does denying such identifications serve?

You might want to check with the Transgender Law Center. They have online resources and might be willing to help you out if you email them.

Uh, gender disphoria is a listed mental disorder. That's gotta have legal bearing.
