The term can be defined as numerous meanings, according to wiktionary.

(a) Possibly a pronunciation of the word “drunk” spelled in reverse (“knurd”), used to mean a person who does not drink at parties; however, this seems somewhat contrived.

(b) slang) A generally intelligent person who shows interest and aptitude in multiple, usually academic-related subjects (as opposed to geeks, who are only interested in one such subject).SO THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GEEKS AND NERDS. This definition is independent of social skills.

(C) (slang) A person with a passion for a seemingly trivial and non-sports related pursuit, misunderstood by society at large but proud of personal achievements.

(D) (slang) A Geek without social skills, who fits in well in most groups.

so, a nerd is not exactly someone who DOES not have a social life, they are simply NOT ACCEPTED into the society. it's the society that has to misconception.

Hoped that answer your question.

nerd:
Slang. 1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.

2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.

Usually, one does not care to be called a "nerd/nurd". It would mean you have just done something "dumb" or "stupid".

If you don't know what a nerd is, maybe it's because you are a nerd.

Generally Nerd means

1. offensive term: an offensive term deliberately insulting somebody’s physical appearance or social skills (slang insult)

2. single-minded enthusiast: an enthusiast whose interest is regarded as too technical or scientific and who seems obsessively wrapped up in it (often used in combination; offensive in some contexts)
