when I was little, December was a year long. it felt like a millenia from 12/1 to the 24th. Each day, I would open a little door on my chocolate advent calendar--gosh it was so hard to have self control and not eat ahead. (the chocolate in those things wasn't even that great, I think now, but the little shapes and the surprise! made it taste better)
now I barely blink and its time to get shopping done! get the tree, decorate, bake holiday cookies, write cards...
the joy is still there, but its different. I don't care so much about getting gifts--instead I get exhilarated by finding that perfect present for someone I love! I get annoyed with the commercialism even as I like to spoil the kids in my life, making their Christmas magical.
and now, christmas means a lot more to me because its a religious as well as family holiday.
hope you enjoy yours!
god bless!

When I was little, we had our traditions at home. We watched A Christmas Carol (with George C. Scott), decorated the tree as a family, never stayed away from home Christmas Eve, and had a big Christmas breakfast, after which we would call my grandparents (all my cousins and aunts and uncles were there... we'd call and compare Santa visits).
Now, the celebration is about the same, only I'm on the grown-up end of it. My husband and I don't spend Christmas Eve away from home. We watch Elf and Muppet Christmas Carol (it's the only version my husband, who is not that into Christmas, can tolerate, and my preschoolers love it) instead of A Christmas Carol. We still decorate the tree as a family unit, only my kids have their own 3-footer with unbreakable ornaments. Instead of the breakfast strata my mom makes (she still does, she just moves it to the day we're over there instead of actual Christmas morning), we have breakfast pizza.
The actions are all the similar, but there's definately something different about the mindset now that I'm an adult with my own children. I can't really pinpoint it, though. It makes driving around looking at Christmas lights, an activity I have always found insanely boring, a lot of fun, not because of the lights themselves but because my three-year-old points out EVERY house, business and street that is decorated and yells "Look!!! Christmas lights!!!!"

Much more commercial now. People rush the season and decorate their houses in November, when the Christmas merchandise goes on the shelves in the stores. Pretty soon the stuff will be going up in September, and people will keep their trees up all year round! We used to save decorating the tree for Christmas Eve; it takes something special away from it when you do it so early; you're tired of looking at it by the time Christmas rolls around.

No. The "conflict on Christmas" is an invention of bloviating communicate prepare hosts hoping to spice up rankings. it somewhat is approximately as "real" or actual by using fact the debate between biblical literalism and evolutionary biology. those individuals disingenuously forget approximately "chuffed trip trips" has been in use in England for hundreds of years, by using fact it includes each and all of the holy days of introduction, plus Christmas, plus the recent 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. additionally they feign lack of understanding that the X in yule isn't the Latin letter X, yet extremely the Greek letter Chi, the 1st letter in Christ's call in Greek. It additionally has been used for hundreds of years.

It's always been commercialized...but it's all about what you understand the meaning of it to be. I never celebrated it as a child, but since becoming a Christian 10 years ago it's signifcant because it reminds me that Christ came to earth to save us. It's highlighted by Easter a few months down the road....his death, burial and resurrection all for sinners. It's a beautiful time of year. :)

yes much more geared towards the commercialization. can remember when the merchants waited until after Thanksgiving to push Christmas and now it is here before Halloween. I get tired of Christmas much quicker these days and can hardly wait until it is over. this year am having to force myself to even wrap gifts.

Actually, except for different family members, it's about the same as when I was a child. I tried to keep it the same for my children, and now keep it the same for my granddaughter.
