Sorry, you don't say what make is.

IF it is a Ford product in the 90's, they have big time issues with the tilt steering wheel (actuator). It is a little metal piece (looks like a little hook) in the steering wheel column, that breaks or gets moved to the wrong position (by changing the steering wheel). Then, when the key is turned to start the motor, it acts like no battery, or when you go to shut off the engine, it will not shut off. Now this doesn't happen every time. Just enough to get ya p'd off, until it goes completely out.

Also, in cold weather, if the batter isn't charged enough, or it has loose posts (the things the battery cables connect to), or loose battery cables (as someone else said), OR

The grounding for the engine could be loose, etc.

Each brand has different quirks, some have issues with the master computer box that could cause the problem you ask about.

Hope this and the other answers give you a place to start looking.

Look for either or both of these things:
There is a relay that gets the juice to your starter motor. Inspect. Replace.
Tighten the battery terminals real well - not too tight, you may break the terminal.

It happened to me when I took my date for dinner. I had to walk home with her (late night) - afterwards in the morning I discovered it was just a battery lose connection. It is so embarassing when that happens esp. when you want to impress your date. At least, we can laugh later about it I suppose.

It sounds like you may have a lose connection on your battery terminal. You do not say what type of car it is (and I am not that familiar with some UK models) but try to move the battery cables around by hand. If you can move them, they are too loose and are not always making good contact. Clean and tighten them, and see if that solves your issue!

I just had the same problem with my car and it did this for 3 days then it finally wouldn't start. I had to have my starter replaced. Hope this isn't the case for you. Good luck.
