You will need a land phone line to dial in for the program data. If you use an internet phone connection, you may have a problem. You can hook up your Tivo to a home network (wired or wireless) that connects to the internet, but this requires additional hardware. The Tivo modem may or may not work if you have an internet phone service like Vonage or a digital service like Verizon FIOS.

You will also need to either call Tivo or visit their website to activate the service and pay for the service.

The physical hookup is very simple. Tivo includes all the cables you could possibly need to hook it up, and if you have problems they will help you via their 800#. There are diagrams with the Tivo box that explain about 99% of the possible configurations. It's really not hard at all.
