It depends on the year of the vehicle. With newer cars, usually you can, on older cars there is not a key code related to the VIN. On some cars, the only way to get a replacement / extra key is through the dealer!

Dealers will not make keys based on a VIN for just anyone. Someone off the street cannot just go in and say they want a key made and give them the VIN. The dealer will want proof of ownership of the vehicle.

The best thing to do, seeing as you do not say what year, make or model car you are asking about, is to call the dealer and ask them if they can make a key for your specific vehicle.

Theoretically, they could, but they will need a lot more than just a VIN. With just a VIN, they will need to contact the dealership to get the specific key, and most dealerships will not make keys with just the VIN due to obvious security reasons. The VIN is nothing more than just an ID number.

ONLY the selling dealer can do this without a lot of leg work. There is a specific key code attached to the VIN of a car, but the original selling dealer is the only dealer that would have it. On some of the later model cars the code is kept by the factory and can be accessed, but a dealer will only cut a key for the documented owner of the vehicle.
GM policy takes over in this case.

no, in order to get a key made u need 1 of 2 things, 1 is the vin number and 2 is proof that u r the owner of the vehicle. they just passed a law due to people randomly coming into dealerships and getting keys made to steal vehicles....no lie!

I work for a chevrolet dealer. I know for a fact we cut them from the VIN. You will have to provide proof of ownership: title, regristration, drivers license, etc. They will not cut a key for just anyone.

Strange but true. You can get a key. VIN is visible thru the windshield for anyone to see.

I think they should change that, now that I think about it. They should put the VIN in the door jamb.

Just saw this on the news the other day - YES YOU CAN and according to the news I saw, that is not necessarily a good thing!!! So can anybody else that looks into your windshield and gets the VIN# of your car. Then guess what, they steal your car. It's that simple. The news suggested that to keep this from happening, put a piece of tape over your VIN# so no one can see it. Glad you brought that up, I had forgotten about it myself, need to go tape mine up. Thanks

You'll need to prove it's your car. Bring ID and your insurance info, or title, etc. Anything with the VIN & your name.
