The others have mentioned why the Spirit of Christmas, at least in the world's eyes is on life support and is but an inch away from snuffing it. That's on the outside. To be honest, I think people like us, so many who have responded to your question are living proof that the Christmas Spirit remains alive.
In my family, seldom going to church, but none the less Christian, Christ remains at the centrepiece of the entire celebration.

Yes, bring back the days when you couldn't shop all night or on the Internet. Bring back the days when the shops shut at 17:30 and closed on Sundays. Bring back the days when the shops closed for Christmas and everyone had Boxing day off. Bring back the days when the January sales was the only sales you got and the big department stores opened and sold sofas for £10 to the first in line on January the 1st. Bring back the days when you only had the four channels to fight over and nobody had mobile phones that could go off throughout the Christmas dinner.

The true spirit of christmas went missing ages ago, now we have the commercialised christmas when everyone becomes materialistic.
Christmas is not for our benefit, but to big business who will make billions of profit. While the poor will go further into debt trying to keep pace with the rest of society :(

If that's how you feel why not try going into
a church this Christmas ?
It matters not what denomination you are or what
the churches is.
You will find the true meaning of Christmas
is in a house of god.

Maybe some people would feel that it's gone, but i think it will never go all we need is something that would make it visible again.
