For your jeans, you want to minimize your middle. The best way to do this is with a mid rise jean. A high waistline will give you a bulge underneath (mommy belly), and a low rise will give you a roll over the top of the waistband (muffin top.) Look for a darker wash for a more slimming color, plus it makes you look like you have longer legs. Then you want a boot cut for a slimmer, longer line, and higher back pockets to minimize your rear, and lengthen your legs.

For a top, you want to draw the eye up, away from your widest part, and add some depth to your shoulders and bust to add the illusion of a balanced figure. The hemline should stop right at the hip bone, the smallest part of the hip; never at the waist (which makes the area below look wider) or below the hips (which will make you look shorter.) Avoid styles that are belted, or need to be tucked it. Cowl, boat, and square necklines all add width to your shoulders, and draw the eye up. Look for lighter and bright colors to keep the attention on your torso. Avoid tops with full, or flared sleeves that draw the eye, which also draws the eye to your middle and hips. Look for things like wrap tops, tops with ruching, ruffles at the neckline or down the middle, twisted necklines, empire waistlines, and other styles that keep the attention at the top, not the middle. 3/4 sleeves are a great way to keep attention off your widest part. Layered looks are also wonderful: a jacket over a bright shirt, a lace inset built into a top, a cami under a deep V tunic, to name a few. You aren't as limited as you might think. The best way to find out what looks good on you is to try things on before buying.

mid section as in tummy?
Then i'd suggest empire cut tops. They'll hide the bulge.
