The American version of Wii probably doesn't work because of the fact that it can't read the games that are released in Britain. You will have to buy Wii games from America in order for it to play on the American version of Wii. All this by they way has something to do with regional codes on the games.

Like the one answer said earlier ... the coding is different on european games. As for voltage it is not the voltage but the AC (alternating current) frequency that prevents the U.S. and Europe from using each others electronics. I do not remember the exact frequency for Europe but it may be 50Hertz. In the U.S. the electricity is 60hertz. That may not seem like much to some but in electronic terms it is huge.

It's a different plug socket configuration as well as the voltage, plus the format they use for their games is different than the one for Europe and Britain. I think they use NTSC and we have PAL format, that's why if you buy a game from America for your british console, it won't work.

Basically nothing is compatible. The voltage, mains frequency and all the wifi stuff - and I assume it plugs in to a TV - that's not compatible either. We have UHF 625 line TV.

The real reason why it does not work is because your PAL in Britain and were NTSC here in the states. Just like a dvd doesnt work when you buy it here.

US and Japanese games run at 60 Hz compared to 50Hz for european games. that means US games are faster than europeans. you would have to get your Wii modified to allow it to play US games, but as its just been released i doubt that anyone has created a 'mod' chip for it yet :(
