EU foreign ministers are considering what sanctions to impose on Turkey over its failure to open its ports to trade with the Greek Cypriot government of Cyprus.

Turkey wants an embargo lifted on the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state but the European Commission has proposed freezing elements of Turkey's membership talks.

The 25 EU member states are deeply divided over Turkish membership. Supporters say it's strategically important to welcome this moderate Muslim nation. Opponents fear Turkey's size, relative poverty, historical and cultural differences.

Would you like to see Turkey join the EU?

Yes, I think that the Turks will add an important Muslim vote and a different viewpoint on many issues. Further, if Turkey is accepted into the EU, they should be required to talk about Cyprus, if not give up more outright.

Not until they leave Cyprus, recognise the Armenian genocide, remove the military from governement, let the Orthodox patriarchate free, give rights to the Kurds, remove casus belli against Greece, make deep changes in their legal system to become modern and in line with Europe. Develop all the country and not just few areas. Change deeply so that culturally they reach European standards like stop honor killings etc. Bring their economy up. Stop being a military threat to their neighbors. Respect religious and Ethnic minorities. Get rid of institutional ultra nationalism in the givernemnt. Find democratic ways to contain religious fundamentalism.

Yes, but not while they do not regularise their relationship with Cyprus and recognise the Armenian genocide.

Therefore I don't think they would be ready before 10 or 15 years from now.

Then shall we discuss this again, and I would be OK.

Once Turkey comes to terms with the Armenian genocide and relations with Cyprus, yes.

No, never! The EU is the EUROPEAN Union.
When the USA will make a US-State out of Iraq or Mexico, then we can talk about it again.
