Buy a a external USB hard drive conversion kit. They aren't that expensive and you don't have to change or worry about master/slave settings on you current computer since it's not going to be connected to the IDE controller. When you are done you can use the largest hard drive for storing files in a safe place.

You can get one at any decent electronics store.

I bought a USB hard drive case for about $40.00 I took HDD for my old computer and stuck it in and hooked to my working computer via the USB and accessed all my files. But I guess this wouldn't work if the HDD was screwed.

Yes, you can plug the drive(s) into another computer as long as they will be the second or other additional drive. The computer will boot the FIRST active partition it finds, which should be the drive you are booting from now. Then you can try copying all the files you want.

All you have to do is hook up the hard drive from the dead computer to another computer and you can grab the files off of it.

The hard drives can be transferred, ( re-connected ) to a working computer, often it can be a DIY project. Should be inexpensive to have swap done by a computer service man.
