Hi there. There is absolutely no reason to get rid of your cats! It is true that cat boxes can carry a disease called toxoplasmosis, so can fish tanks and bird cages. It is a good idea to wear gloves if you have to perform any of these cleaning chores. I had three cats thru all of my pregnancies and no one to do the cat boxes for me. I wore rubber gloves and washed my hands alot. The other thing to consider is that toxoplasmosis is only going to be found in cats that are allowed outside (it has something to do with the little rodents that they hunt) if you have strictly indoor cats the danger is much less significant. My cats never went outside so I really did not worry much.
BTW, my cats alway slept curled up with my babies too. They seemed to love each other, the cats loved the warm little baby and I think the baby loved the purring of the cat. To this day all of my children are big cat lovers.
Just practice common sense and if you are lucky enough to have someone around to help you go ahead and delegate the job of cat boxes to him! It seems a fair trade.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy your pregnancy!
Love and Blessings
Lady T~

I think you might be referring to the myth that a cat will suffocate your baby by laying on it, or that cats will attack and kill a baby. I am pretty sure this is not the case, but something to pose to the mythbusters.

You don't need to get rid of your cats, I just wouldn't let them in the same room as your baby just as a precaution.

No reason to get rid of your cats. I assume your cats stay a lot outside as cats usually do. If your cat has a toilet box inside, well, I wouldn't be the one cleaning it if you are pregnant as there are risks of toxicoplasmosis so get someone else to do it.

No. You *should* have somebody else clean out the cat box, but be and my OB/GYN have came up with something else (because I need my cat emotionally!)

I wear a dust/face mask and disposable gloves. Scoop out the litter box, throw away the gloves and wash my hands with soap, and water and use an anti-bacterial gel. Once that dries, I hang up the face mask.

You should talk with your doctor to see what works for you!
I also use a towel to wipe the kitty paws every now and again (but thats my own thing i've always done!)

I have 3 cats. No problems. I also wore a face mask and gloves when changing the litter. If you can get someone else to do it, great. But if you can't, don't worry about it. Just wash real well afterwards.

You don't have to get rid of your cats, but do understand that having a child and pets can be challenging.

Plenty of pregnant women have cats! =)

In the event you're concerned about toxoplasmosis (from cleaning the litter box), get someone to clean it for you. Or you can wear gloves. If you've been around cats for a while, you're probably already immune to it from being exposed beforehand.

No i have got a 8 month old kitten and im 17 weeks pregnant.
Its great cos my boyfriend who brought me the kitten has to clean out his litter tray.

You can buy cat nets to go over cots and prams etc.

So keep your cats.

not unless you think they would hurt the baby. are they good cats? as long as the cats dont bother the baby or hurt it then there shouldnt be a problem with having both.

why would you get rid of your cats? having a baby i can imagine would be a very exciting experiance (havn't experianced it myself, only 17!) but i would say keep the cats, i don't think they will affect anything.
