I was taught several entries in my class. It depends on the platform you are taking off from. I tend to jump in forward if there is a nice area. You use one hand to hold the mask and regulator and take a large step out. I have never been hit by my tank yet, but you do have to step out far enough to not hit your tank on the platform.

But if you are in a raft or something, it is easier to sit with your back facing the water and just fall backwards into the water.

It all boils down to what is the safest at the time and what you personally feel comfortable with. I have seen some people lay on the side of the platform and just slide in real easy.

first lets set the record straight.. they are not divers until they actually get in the water.. a dive is head first.. since they jump in the water they are jumpers.. when the are in the water they can then go downward head first and because they do that, they are divers.. but as I said while they are in the boat or on a platform they are jumpers.. so the questions should be, why do the jumpers jump backwards.. the answer is simple they jump backwards to get in the water safely by making sure their tanks are clear of the kraft from which they jump.. it's hard to see behind you unless you have a rearview mirror and most jumpers don't wear them..

I assume you mean SCUBA divers. They jump backwards due to the weight of their equipment, and type of equipment. The mask, mouth piece may be damaged or loosened.

BTW: SCUBA stands for, Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.

I would say to keep the impact of the water from ripping of their face mask. If you've ever jumped into he water with a face mask on you would know how it feels.

several reasons : You are carrying a lot of weight and you would not want to hit the water face down like that. Also the mask could cut or easily bruise your face.

As far as I know its so they don't hit themselves with the oxygen tanks. If they go head first the tank could shift forward and crack them in the head and knock themselves out.
