Number one thing I 'd check on that year and model is the fuel pump. They go out all the time and cause just such problems. Other than that the fuel pump relay and then would have to start checking other systems. Make sure fuel filter is good as well. Intermittent problems are often hard to solve which is what you have, but if the car hasn't had a new fuel pump in awhile (is in the tank) then good chance that is where the trouble is coming from. After that all the obvious stuff like ignition, etc. Coils and modules go back on these cars as well on a regular basis.

it can be one of several things

including

broken ground wire(s) at bellhousing bolts in the wiring harnesses, very common problem on the front hwele drive cars of all diffeent makes and models and years, seen it happen alot and it causes alot of unexplained problems like this

bad igntion module- pretty common

bad ignition switch- not common but possible

bad crank position sensor, somewhat common and inexpensive

fuel pump or relay or oil pressure switch for FP- somewhat common

i would go with broken ground wires first, get a flashlight and check the wires bolted to where the engine and tranny bolt together, make sure they are good shape and not frayed or busted off at the bolt heads, it causes all kind sof problmes such as unexplained including one or all of the following plus other problems, missing, dying, rough running, etc

good luck

Sounds like a sticky float in the carburetor, or the fuel filter is clogged try that first
