That media player GUI of Avast can be easily changed by simply checking "Use no skin" or something like that in its options.
Now to your ?
Avast = most configurable, heavy on resource use, average detection rates, infrequent updates
AVG = easiest to use, poorest "in the wild" detection rate of the "big 4" free A-Vs, infrequent updates, light
Anti-Vir = best herustics, light, updates 5-7 times a day, has a history of many false-positives
AVS = best "in the wild" virus detection rates, updates 15 to 20 times a day, 7 days a week, very light
All are pretty decent considering the price!!

I used Avast for nine years an I never had one virus until last week when I was hit with six trojans an Avast missed all six. Plus I agree with you that Avast interface looks like some kind of remote monitor for a toy/game. I removed Avast an I installed the free AOL, "Active Virus Shield". Powered by Kaspersky Labs, out of Russia. Rated # 1 in the world for virus detection.
You don't have to be a member of AOL, and the software is free for life. You get auto updates every hour on the hour, plus a real time guard in the background an also on shutdown and boot up.
Here is the link:

Active Virus Shield found all six trojans and destroyed them.

I think you answered your own question. You use what you like and are convinced does the best job for you. Personally, I've used Avast for 3 years and not had a virus in all that time. So, for me, Avast is best. Besides, who wants to pay for AOL when others just as good, or better, are free?

Seems to me there is no "best" because various help and download sites always say no antivirus catches 100% of the viruses 100% of the time. But there are various labs and magazines that test and certify the different AV programs and most of the major AVs have the same certifications. So really, what difference does it make which one you use as long as you use one?

Avast is the best. Just visit any website that spreads (warez sites in particular) visruses, after installing Avast, it stops even before downloding the file or visiting the web page.
