The first thing that comes to my mind is get him a nintendo ds. But then some other things came to my mind:
- This item may be too expensive especially if he were to lose it or break it if he is not very responsible especially since he is pretty young
-he might scratch or damage the touch screen easily if he isnt careful
-a lot of the games for the ds are more girly type games, to me...
-the games are extremly tiny and he could lose them very easily.
But if your kid is responsible enough and will not damage the touch screen and doesnt lose things to easily then go for the ds.
But personally what I think you should do is get him a gameboy advance sp. This will have a few buttons that he can easily learn how to operate his games unlike the ds because it has a few more buttons than the sp. There is only one screen and you dont have to worry about him scratching it with a stylus. It will be less expenisve if you have to replace it because he dropped it or lost it and there is a very very very large library of games to choose from with plenty of boy games. Plus the games are much bigger than the ds ones and wont be as hard to lose than a skinny chip like the ds. And I would think the sp would be more comfortable and easier to hold for a younger boy because it is thicker and smaller and lighter than the ds and he could get a good grip on it unlike the ds with its' slippery surface.
I would go for the gameboy system since he is so young and everything will be easier for him to use and operate and he will have a better variety of games geared more for his age unlike the ds games that are geared more for older kids. But if you feel good about it you can get him the ds or maybe the original ds because it is chunkyer and would be easier for him to grip and hold on to. If you feel he is responsible enough go ahead and get him the ds. Oh and also if you like you can also get the ds to play gameboy games so you can get him gameboy games instead of jjust ds games. But if you just get him gameboy ones you might as well get the gameboy. I hope this helped you out bye!!!

Nintendo DS is a wonderful gaming system. Just because I love Nintendo, I own one myself. There are a lot of games on there geared towards younger individuals as well as ones for those nostalgic enough to play the games from "back in the day when we were youngsters". It is compatible with Game Boy Advanced games, so he will also have a LOT of variety there. Even though I also own a PSP, to be very honest with you, there is not that much gaming selection for adults, much less a variety for children. Best wishes!

The Nintendo DS, without second thought. It's got the best games for younger kids but I think it's good for everyone. And more economical. Check out the game selection (esp the ones made by Nintendo, such as Mario kart etc).

I have a different answer. Buy him a cycle or scooter, It is the best and most healthy form of mobile entertainment that a young boy needs. Otherwise, there is always a gameboy or PSP or nintendo available.
