Judging by the people I play with, no it's not too late. You might not get to be Charlie Parker, but you'll be able to honk along in a blues, soul or old-fashioned R&B band. If jazz is your thing it will be more difficult - you'll have to have the scales down in a variety of keys, but you should still get a seat in a big-band / dance band setting. You'll need to read music to do jazz, but that's easily learnt. If you're buying an instrument, go to your best local music shop that stocks the biggest number of saxes, chat to them about it, find what they have to say, then see if you can locate one secondhand to start with. I borrowed a sax from a friend for six months and at the end of that time I could play the horn parts in Otis Redding songs and a couple of Clarence Clemons' solos from Bruce Springsteen tracks, so you should be fine if you're not a complete musical muppet.

I'm a music teacher and I say absolutely not. My husband began the cello at 30 and now just got his grade eight Royal Conservatory (four years later). When I retire I'm going to take up yet another instrument to keep my mind in working order and to have an extra hobby. Have a terrific time with your new instrument!!

BTW, you may want to take up the alto sax since it is the most versitile and in my opinion is the easiest to learn.

I wouldn't have thought so. I'm a guitarist and cuz i learned at age 8 my hands and fingers grew longer, which is really a necessity if you want to be proficient (I teach privately in my home out of office hours). If you come to me with small hands and want to learn guitar, i'm guna have to keep it very very basic.
I hope sax is ok tho!! guess its in the lungs or sumthin?? Then ask yourself are you too old to sing? nope! i think you can do it, so go for it!

It's never too late to learn things! It'll be challenging but rewarding. I'm glad I learnt to play the flute (I was about 7 when I started) and have recently taken up the piccolo (now I'm 24!) and it's great. It's the cutest instrument about! It's tricky but you have to practice!

nah. you can learn any instrument even if you are 80. its whether you have the talent or not. i'd say expect nothing and only have the eager to learn. that way you won't be affected by anything and have fun learning your sax too. only close-minded peeps will make fun of your age and what not. ignore them. walk right past them. why even care about them...
