Just came home from vacation and discovered a sour odor in one room. We usually have the humidifier running in there, that was off while we were out of town, which I think may have been masking the smell. I washed everything, cleaned under the bed, etc and have narrowed the smell to one area of the room. It seems to be under the floor. It is on the 2nd floor above the garage.

We have forced hot air, but there is no vent in that area. It's hardwood floor so it's not in the carpet. I'm thinking maybe something got up in btwn the floor and garage ceiling and died? Or maybe a water leak resulting in mildew?

Who or what could help me figure this out? Please help, it's driving me nuts!

It could be something as small as a mouse. We had one die in a closet. Smelled the place up until I finally found it. It does not take much to give off an odor.

I had a similar problem, and, it was driving me nuts, too. It ended up being a plant that had been overwatered, and the water in the retainer dish had gone sour.

Perhaps this is the problem?

If not, you may have to go into the ceiling of your garage to locate it. That could be costly, but, if the smell is that bad, it will be worth it to get rid of whatever is making the smell.

Good luck!

I would guess one of two things, either something did crawl up and pass away, or is there a possibliilty of an animal getting sick on the carpet in that area? You may have to hire someone to pull up the carpet to check the floor unfortunately, mold normally is not sour smelling, but anything dead, or anything that may have gotten sick would be. Good luck

I think you are right, I think something got up in there and died. I had an odor in my laundry and it ended up coming from the drier vent which had a dead snake in there. If it is a dead animal you will have to pull everything up and remove it maybe go up from the garage ceiling so as not to mess up your floors.
