does it shut down? or does the power just cut out? could be a virus if the former. If the power just cuts out then most likely a hadrware problem.

You'd usually check for overheating if a pc suddenly shuts down. Unplug it, take the side of the case and carefully clean it out with short blasts from a can of compressed air.
If its doing it every time you perform a certain action it might be another problem, but cleaning the dust out of the fans is the first thing to try.

A computer shutting itself down randomly is usually due to a bad power supply or the CPU overheating. If you have a power supply tester, test yours and make sure everything is working right. Otherwise, clean out your PC and make sure all of your fans are working, your vents aren't clogged, etc. If you're still having problems, take it a repair shop and have them test your machine.

windows will switch itself off so as to stop any hardware damage, but this is very rare, unless its a virus attacking your pc
to stop your p.c restarting simply go start>control panel>system properties>advanced>start up and recovery>then untick the box "automatically restart"
this will stop any future unexpected restarts, however you should get to the bottom of the problem,it may be due to overheating, check and clean all system fans including the cpu fan and if needed replace broken or defective fans
also check all cables wires and cards(agp, pci) for loose connections, damage and connectivity
also try using a different browser such as firefox(http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/),i started using this as my internet explorer 6 was crashing all the time, and as windows will restart after most crashes.this in my opinion is your problem, and my solution should fix the problem
good luck

You may need to re-install the OS, try upgrading to a pro version. Also, check your power management settings from the control panel.

it could be some form of virus, try scanning your PC.
Also check power options in the control panel.
If all else fails reinstall your OS or upgrade to Windows XP.
