I think competitions are also quite popular, like Zee Cinestar, Líl Champs on Saregamapa and Gurukur, Indian Idols etc.
In general I think the favourites are divided in age groups/gender:
housewifes - serials, competitions, cookery shows
their husbands - news, sports
youngsters - music videos, filmbased stuff and occassionaly serials/ news and competition shows
kids - cartoons, music videos
I regret that there hardly are good talkshows on Indian television, really miss something like Oprah...
