Geez, there was a bunch of them...President Richard Nixon resigned due to Watergate, South Vietnam fell to communist North Vietnam, the U.S. celebrated its bicentennial, someone tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford, Egypt and Israel reached a peace accord, the Space Shuttle Enterprise made a successful landing after being released from a Boeing 747, gas prices shot up over $1.00 a gallon as the result of the energy crisis...given enough time I could come up with some more...

I think other than what sarge 927 said, it was the last leg of gestation and birth of Bangladesh and the release of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from Pak prison due to Indian pressure. All this was as a sequel to the defeat of Pak army at the hands of Indian forces in East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.
