For windows XP, you may follow the following steps:

1.Put the CD and press any key to boot from CD.

2.First screen asks whether to enter recovery console by pressing r or to press enter to install windows XP.
Press ENTER.
3.Press F8 to I Agree the conditions.
4.Setup detects the previously installed OS and asks to press r to repair or enter to install.
Press enter.
and select the partition drive c.
and format the partition using NTFS (Quick)., here, you loose all the data in drive c.
If you donot wish to loose data, then try other partition without formatting.

Setup will automatically repair the OS.

After copying some files, system will restart. This time you should not press any key to boot from CD.

There are two methods one is attended that's via CD ROM and the other one is unattended via PXE (Pre Boot Execution) compatible Network card via a network installation. You could also clone the installation something that I tested during Windows 98/2000 era but I have not checked these days since I am with Linux these days. If you want to make your computer the easiest thing these days is to boot with the Linux Live CD/DVD and see how it works have a look at http://ubuntu.org or similar sites.
