Transportation involves moving something (could be people, could be goods/commodities for sale) from one place to another. The type of transportation to be used depends on a lot of things like cost, transportation time, whether you can even use a certain type of transportation, etc. For example, if you wanted to transport several hundred pounds of fruit from New York to Los Angeles, there are several ways you can do it (truck, boat, train, plane). Transportation by plane would be the fastest, but it would also be the most expensive. Transportation by boat would take several weeks and can be pricey. Transportation by rail or truck would probably be the least expensive, but they would both take longer than a plane would. So if you had to get the fruit there quickly, you'd probably spend the extra money and have it transported by plane. If you had more time to get the stuff there, you'd probably ship it by rail or truck. Make sense?
