I believe it is hereditary. My step father was bald at 26 and I have an old friend from school that was pretty much bald senior year of high school. I have heard it comes from the mother's side so look at the men on your mom's side of the family. Bald is not bad and actually I have always been attracted to bald men. Don't know why? I think bald men are smarter than thick heavy haired men, he he!

Baldness is a trait which involves the state of lacking hair where it often grows, especially on the head. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair thinning condition called androgenic alopecia or 'male pattern baldness' that occurs in adult human males and some primate species. The severity and nature of baldness can vary greatly; it ranges from male and female pattern alopecia (androgenetic alopecia, also called androgenic alopecia or alopecia androgenetica), alopecia areata, which involves the loss of some of the hair from the head, and alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of all head hair, to the most extreme form, alopecia universalis, which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body. Treatment for alopecia has limited success. The more hair lost, the less successful the treatment will be.
The psychological implications for individuals experiencing hair loss vary widely. The most significant effect is a loss of self-confidence. This is enhanced by an insecure or ambivalent attachment pattern.
Hair loss is something everyone experiences. On any given day a person will lose an average of 50 to 150 hairs. This is counting fly-aways, shower clogs, hair brushes and dinner plate contributors.
Most permanent hair loss is inherited. But there are a plethora of other reasons for young age hair loss.
High stress levels, autoimmune diseases or other illnesses, including thyroid problems, medications, diet and even wearing tight hairstyles can cause permanent hair loss. But people shouldn't be worried too much about wearing their hair in ponytails. People with permanent hair loss caused by reasons of this nature make up a limited number.
Though it is commonly believed inherited baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, comes from the mother's father, scientists and doctors now know baldness genes are passed on from both the mother and the father.
Baldness can also skip generations and siblings. The fact is there are likelihoods and guesses but until the hair doesn't complete the molting process, there is no evidence of permanent baldness.
About 90 percent of people's hair is growing at any time. Growth of a particular strand of hair lasts between two and six years, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. At the end of the growth period, the hair falls out and a new hair grows from the same folicle. Hair grows at a rate about .5 inches a month. And as people get older, hair growth time slows.
Appearance, age and confidence play an important role in functioning in the American society. Health and body image are important aspects of people's lives, as evident by the creation of such things like Propecia and Rogaine, which claim to instigate hair growth.
Balding usually occurs post puberty, but at random ages from person to person.
Because female balding or hair thinning isn't talked about or acknowledged as much, the level of discrimination is seemingly different than the more pronounced discrimination men claim to face with baldness. Women usually experience their thinning hair over the top and sides of their heads, according to the American Hair Loss Council. In women, hair loss is most commonly occurs after menopause, although it can start as early as puberty.
