Missy, first thing you have to know is The Red Sox have until midnight (edt) on December 14th to sign him. He hasn't said "NO" yet. As far as I can tell (and I loked everywhere), they are still in the process of talking.

Second, (as other people have said) The Red Sox do NOT have to pay that $51M unless he is signed (which, btw, hasn't happened yet. I remind you that the red sox have until Thursday to do so).

Third, (in a very strange way) The Red Sox did that just to keep the yankees from getting him. I think The Red Sox have no plans on signing him, and therefore will not have to pay that $51M.

But, if The Red Sox do sign him, then yes I agree with Mick7 and others. The Red Sox would be foolish. Seems like they want to keep up with the "jones's".

I've hardly ever complained about the yankees spending money.
If the owner of The Tigers had that kind of money I would hope he'd spend it too.

My problem with yankee fans (not ALL) is that attitude they have.

ALL OF YOU HAVE WRONG INFORMATION in that it is NOT Matsuzaka but his agent: Scott Boras, who is making this negotiation stalled.

Matsuzaka is eager to play in MLB and he does not care much about money. That is why he chose this posting system two years before he can be free agent, knowing that he cannot choose his favorable club through this system. Matsuzaka did not expect that the Red Sox would place such an enormous amout for the bid.

It was Boras who jumped in this deal like a hyena or a vulture, trying to make (or steal) money out of this unprecedented bid. Matsuzaka has no objection to Red Sox offer of $7-8M annual salary (which is higher than his $5M this year in Japan) with 4-5 year contract.

Boras is demanding $15M annual payment with 3 year contract so that he would have another chance sooner. As U.S. media reported, there is “an ocean apart” gap between the two, which is ridiculous if Boras’ greed prevents Matsuzaka from playing in MLB next year by taking advantage of this innocent but highly capable young pitcher from Japan.

Getting irritated and terribly concerned about this deal, Matsuzaka flew to L.A. yesterday to tell Boras to complete this contract ASAP, and that he would accept the Red Sox offer to make his dream come true ever since he was 12 years old.

Japanese media and the whole nation in Japan are furious about Boras. In response to Japanese media’s telephone inquiry, Boras said, “I am doing my best not only for Matsuzaka but other Japanese players who would come to MLB in the future as well.” What a BS!

Nobody is sure what will happen to this negotiation which expires at midnight Thursday; however, one thing crystal clear is that no Japanese players would never use Boras for their agent NEVER EVER!

The Red Sox offered this much money just to prevent the Yankees from getting him. They don't have to pay the $51M unless he signs. The Royals could have offered $51B and if Boras would have excepted the offer, the Royals would not be out a dime if they couldn't sign Matsuzaka.

Hun they get the money all 51.1 million back if he doesn't sign. According to RedSox.com "he is well placed" but the Theo wont comment until the deal in complete one way or the other. Don't assume just because you hate the Red Sox and want to seem like they waisted money. They need pitching so that is what they are getting.

While the Red Soxs did not lose their money because it is returned if he didn't sign, they are hypocrites. I hate the Yankees and have felt lately they are trying to buy a championship. However, the Red Soxs being critical of them and then going out this year and doing the same thing is horrible. They need to keep their mouths shut and stop criticizing the Yanks. The Yanks have great management and know what they are doing, as they always have. This pains me to say that, but they are truly a great team. I am an Oriole fan, so you will know my feelings to the Yanks. The Red Soxs need to focus on building a team, not buying one. Paying $51 million to negotiate with an unproven talent in the MLB is crazy. Just because he had a good tournament in the world baseball championships doesn't mean he will be able to grind out a whole MLB season plus the playoffs. Huge waste of money if they would have had to pay it.

No the Red Sox do not have to pay a dime of that.

Agent Scott Boras apparently seemed reluctant to budge at all from his demand that the 26-year-old be paid as one of the top pitchers in Major League Baseball.

That led many to believe he would prefer his client return to Seibu, which wouldn’t receive a cent of the record $51.11 million that the Sox bid in the posting process last month.

They're not as dumb as it appears. By bidding the 51.1 million dollars to essentially have exclisive rights to Matsuzaka the Red Sux blocked other teams from signing him and if the price is right they can sign a potentially great pitcher.
