I read pretty much anything from Graham Masterton to Karin Slaughter to Real life - anything really, not a huge fan of fantasy books, though have still read a few, I read at least one book a week, and am running short of idea's, getting stuck with the same authors all the time.

Anthem by Ayn Rand--About a teenage boy , set in afuturistic society where the government and culture are oppressive. I cannot do it juustice. You can read it online here. It is a short read, veryvery good:

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis--Correspondence between two demons, a master and his fledgeling. Very good book, and short. I first read it in my 20s, and it changed my life.

The Third Life of Grange Copeland by Alice Walker--Redemption theme. Alice Walkers best book, IMO.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire--the untold story of the wicked witch of the west. Alot happened before Dorothy showed up. The popular musical was based on this wonderful, complex and mature version of events.

The Male Cross Dresser Support Group by Tama Janowitz (Not like it sounds.. This was written by a straight woman, about straight characters, and is not about homosexuality or cross dressing). Great dark comedy.

The Painted Bird, by Jerzy N. Kosinski. One of my college professors sneered at the book, and said, "It's disgusting -- don't touch it." I, of course, sought it out. Library book sale, 50 cents. It's not something I'd recommend reading when you're trying to settle in for pleasant dreams at night, but I think it's a book everyone should read. This book made me a better person, in many ways, and made me reconsider many things I'd believed before. I'll leave it at that.

I would recommend the Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling. Although you say you are not really big into fantasy, these books are well written, and are very good. I recommend them because they are creative, unique, enjoyable, and they are really thick books. (the thicker the better)

The Bible. A very interesting book, If you haven't read it yet from cover to cover I would recommend it for reading. Why? It tells us about "From creation to resurrection." and the eternal state of man.
