There are scummy sites out there, but there are also legitimate survey sites out there. Companies pay (not much usually, but they do pay) to have people take surveys about products and such because it saves them money in the long run. If the research saves them from producing something people won't buy, paying for advertising that's inneffective (or worse, turns people off to their products), or producing too much or too little of something, then it's worth it to them to pay a several hundred people a few bucks to help find those things out first. (Don't believe anyone who says you can make an income off of this though--I usually make about $20 a month, and I'm signed up with a bunch of these sites).

I've listed most of the sites I have taken surveys through and actually been paid (or recieved other rewards like gift cards or CDS) on the following site, if you are interested:

http://www.windhavenweb.com/surveys

I list how they pay you, what I like and dislike about them, whether they have an affiliate or referral program, etc. (And, by the way, if they say they have an affiliate program, I'm part of it...which means I make commission off of sign-ups through my links. Some scummy sites have affilaite/referral programs, but so do some good ones.)

But Golden is right about this--there are scams, and there are sites which just want your info to sell it. Always carefully read their terms of service and privacy policy. If in their privacy policy they say they only use aggregated info, this is GOOD SIGN they are legit. Aggregated info information that is grouped together so it can't be connected with anyones personal identification like name, e-mail, phone or address. That's what survey sites SHOULD collect. Avoid sites that say they give, rent, or sell any personal information (info that is not agregated) to third parties (unless you really don't mind getting junk mail, telemarketing calls, and spam).

Don't sign up for any survey site which asks you to pay to access the surveys (these usually just refer you to places that you can sign up for free elsewhere, from what I've heard--besides, you should never have to pay to do a job). Also watch for language like "get paid for taking surveys AND SIGNING UP FOR OFFERS" if you don't want to have to sign up for stuff with other companies to get paid.

Oh, and never sign up for a new survey site through an un-solicited e-mail. They may not be the site they claim to be.

The following survey ratings site is very helpful. Anyone can go there and rate a survey site. (Make sure there are lots of ratings before believing them though--if there are just one or two that could be the company and it's employees rating their own site).

I made around $50 a day doing surveys, and I've got 3 years experience in this stuff. It won't be $300/hour but you make a decent amount every day.

It also depends on the site you sign up on and the credit rate of each survey AND how much the advertiser is paying. If you're getting $5/hour something is wrong. I've got 3 years experience in this stuff and I know that a newbie should be able to rake in more than 15 dollars easy an hour. I pity all the people who said only $300 a month or less because if you actually knew how works then your making an easy $100+ a day. I made $50 a day because I spend no more than 2 hours in taking surveys.

Making money by taking surveys is not a complex issue. But, it's important for you to get a right guide to follow to making money easily. For more methods and steps, please visit the link below. Good luck!

Golden is correct about how you earn the money with a majority of survey sites. Places like Treasure Trooper & Cash Crate have you sign up for "offers", "surveys", or "free" items, and put a cash amount on each one.

You sign up for them through a partner, not through the actual website. The partner sells the information you provide to other companies and telemarketers. This is why they require a phone number, and an email address.

I get around these by providing a fake phone number, and I use a junk email address. I do get junk snail mail as well. I have joined Treasure Trooper, and have earned almost $150 in 2 months time doing almost no work, but I will warn you that if you put in your actual email address, or phone number, you WILL get calls and spam email.

There are other types of survey's, too, that pay. I get $5 cash for doing product survey's through Pinecone Research. They only offer about 2-5 per month, though, so it's not a way to make a living.

I listed my blog below, which shows the many ways I use to make money & free gift cards online, and I only post ones which I have actually recieved a payment from. I also list the do's & don't's of each program, too, and how to get around things that might cause future problems.

yes I am reaching $100 a day sometimes, of course it is up to the person, if you write bad surveys then soon nobody will give you any work :)
some sites also ask for money, this is a rip off too.

no, you cannot. these are scams to collect email addresses and financial info. the spammer above is lie-ing. if you click his link and then sign up he gets a percentage of whatever you might make. since you will not make anything, he will not. he just hasn't figured that out yet.

the guy running the survey site makes money by selling information and email addresses.
