I love autobiographies/biographies/memoirs... especially those pertaining to hardship, survival and turning over a new leaf because we learn the lessons learnt by these people.

I like to read fantasy/science-fiction books like Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling. I like to read many other books too, but this series is very creative, and I like the twists that are written in them. I like fantasy type books because they have creatures and things that are not on this earth, so instead, I can read about them, and imagine what other things are like. I can go into "another world" when I read, and be with the characters as they go through important quests.

anything except Mills and Boon romances and coffee table books, they just bore me. Fiction is great for escapism - my favourite is science fiction and fantasy novels. History and quantum physics are my favourite factual books and I have also been know to pick up the occasional book of poetry. With so many books out there, how can any-one not like to read??

I'm not keen on romances, and I find very technical fiction about aircraft like Dale Brown (no not Dan Brown the davinci code guy - Dale Brown) quite difficult. And I don't like gratuitous blood guts and body parts, so I've never even attempted a Stephen King.
Other than that I'll give it a go.

I love fantasy and sci-fi books. i love to escape into these beautiful worlds where i can be everything i would love to be. i love books by David Gemmel, they are so beautifully written and cover such a broad spectrum of situations an emotions, not just your typical 'there is a hero and he kills things' type books. Tolkein of course is a genius, and Pratchett is another personal favourite. i like books which challenge my intellect and force me to consider my views on the world. this is how i stay broad minded! all of this from fantasy!
i also read books on battle strategy and war, because i am a strange person who likes to analyse battles, and see how i would have fought them. i enjoy books on philosophy too, as these present me with different viewpoints to my own. often i have found my own views on things changing because of these!
my personal favourite books still have to be the fantasy genre though, simply for the pure escapism and pleasure they bring me.

I love historical stuff - non-fiction usually (Alison Weir is a favourite) but I LOVED Margaret George's 'the Autobiography of Henry V111'. Very accurate, absolutely gripping and very poignant. I've read it loads of times (And also, of course The Lord of the Rings - sheer genius)

I mainly read contemporary fiction and prizewinners, to avoid the derision of snobbish little troglodytes who only read what they are told over a coffee table. When I get the chance to avoid status-monkying its mainly sci-fi and graphic novels, purely for enjoyment.

Historical fiction.
Some really good books also by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn . (Cancer Ward and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich are the two books that I read by him and they are pretty good)

Books like 'Wild Swans' by Yung Chang and 'Roots' by Alex Hayley. Wild Swans gives an in-depth account of the lives of three generations of Chinese women. Roots traces one story of an African slave and highlights the atrocities that were allowed during that era.

I will read almost anything. I usually stay away from magazines though. As a kid I learned that books can set you free.
