i exclude silent films.

i am thinking more of visual poetry here or video art.

i want to watch a rich mixture of images that are loosely linked, why can stimulate my imagination, but doesnt impose any set meaning.
a kind of filmic abstract expressionism.

Well, Salvador Dali the Surrealist painter did a film in 1929 called An Andalusian Dog (Un Chien Andalou). It's a silent film and features wierd scenes such as a woman having her eyeball slit with a razor. Nice!

Pink Floyd's The Wall has only 2 spoken lines. The Who's Tommy has even less, as the music projects the movie along. Most 'silent films' DID INDEED have dialogue. That's why you'll notice they're always moving their lips and talking. We just can't hear them, so the dialogue is projected to us through the use of cue cards. Very good question. I'm also thinking that the movie 'Quest For Fire' had no dialogue as it was about cavemen discovering sex and fire and they couldn't speak words yet. Also, though there IS some dialogue, the films 'Mad Max' and 'Road Warrior' have several long periods where nothing is spoken and lots of imagery is used to convey the story. George Miller (director) says he would love to make a 'mad max' movie with absolutely no dialogue as his first experimental films had none. Now, if they could only re-release 'Saturday Night Fever' with no dialogue, THAT would be something...LOL! ;-)

A very famous example is 'Un Chien Andalou' made by the master-Surrealists Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel. There are many interpretations of it but I found this one to be particularly good: http://www.film.u-net.com/Movies/Reviews/Chien_Andalou.html Hours have been spent trying to work out its meaning but it's time wasted, as its very purpose is to be meaningless. Be warned if you watch it, there is a particularly horrific scene of an eye being sliced open!

Don't know about surreal imagery, but there waas an old black and white english comedy movie back in the 60's without dialogue called "a home of your own". One of the funniest movies ever made.

Try 'Baraka'. (1992)
Described on the dvd jacket as a (quote) "World beyond words. Baraka is a journey of rediscovery. It is the power, the beauty and the rage of life itself. It is the world we live in".
There is absolutely no dialogue and is as surreal as you want it to be. It leaves you to react according to your own view of the world and your own version of normality. If that isn't dreamlike I don't know what is.

Loads probably, and I was dragged along to see some of them by a boyfriend. One of them - Civilisation - likened life to a game of croquet. With each hit of the ball we are taken to a new scene. The rest I have forgotten, mercifully. But the Surrealists made films which you could probably access via Google.
I am having none of it having been scarred for life by the above.
