You should be able to put the old hard drive into a case and turn it into a new external hard drive - if it still works!
You may need data recovery software, you can get that free;
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwdatarecovery.html - PC inspector file recovery
I reckon your best bet is to find a local guru and get them to help, it shouldn't take longer than an hour and cost about £30 odd quid.

Two options here ... purchase an external hard-drive case and insert the old drive into it ...then plug the case into any available USB port ..... or
Install the drive into the new case as a second drive (you have to set the little plastic "jumper pins" on the rear of the drive to slave otherwise nothing will happen) and use the old drive as added internal storage
If the old hard-drive is faulty ... the safest option as to not damage your new computer is to go with the external enclosure ...
Good Luck :)
P.S Data retrieval companies charge thousands of dollars to restore data from hard-drives ... if it's dead ...it's dead ... cut your losses ... for a small outlay (approx $30.00) the external enclosure is worth a try

Yes, you can retrieve family photos from old pc hard drive.You will need to download something like asoftech data recovery program.
http://www.asoftech.com/articles/External-Drive-Data-Recovery.html
I've had used it many times in the past and it always worked for me. You need to connect external hard drive into a Windows computer and run the data recovery software from there. It will rebuild the external hard drive drive and hopefully recover lost photos videos document and other files.

Does the harddrive appear damaged? If not, you can purchase external harddrive cases, get one, and mount the drive in that - you will have to make sure it is operating as a slave - and it will show as a new drive on your new computer. The case should come with the necessary USB cables etc.

It's certainly possible. Unless you really know what you're doing with computers, you would be best to find a professional data retrieval firm in your area. If you Google using the key words "data retrieval" and your state (use the city also if you live in a large one) It should give you a number of options to contact
Try to get them to give a cost estimate, as it can be quite expensiv.
Best of luck!
