Depends entirely on what sort of computer you have .... if it's a Compaq or HP or Acer it should have a recovery partition that you can reload Windows from ... by doing a "destructive" restore it will re-format the drive and reload the computer to as you bought it .... if you have a copy of XP on CD with a cd key ... then just re-install it ... if it rejects your activation you may have to ring Microsoft and tell them that you've reformatted and reloaded Windows .. they will issue you with a new activation key

1.do you have recovery disks which came with the computer when it was first purchased?
2. do you have a product key code? it can be found on the back of you computer on a sticker, or maybe with the paperwork your computer came with.
if you answered no to both questions, then yes, you need to buy a copy.

if you have the keycode and a disc..reinstall it..if you have the keycode and no disc...go to a computer shop and see if someone will burn you a copy...if you have neither..yes.
