Older age group clothes are always a good bet as they grow so quickly newborn clothes are cute but mine lived in babygros and rarely got chance to wear posh togs. really soft blankets, or one of those all in one winter suit things- so cute. Silver is a nice idea as it's something they can keep.
Don't forget little gift and card for sibling. Give to them first and ask if they'll show you their new baby. I asked my friends to do this when I had my second and it really helped my eldest not to feel jealous or left out.

There are many.
The ones I appricated the most as I look back was a babies first Christmas Ornament. ( I put it on the tree tonight) It was given to my first born in1984. I love to see and place it on the tree every year.
Another is a savings bond. I didn't think much of it at the time but it has been a great spring board in teaching my son about being responsible with his money. Over the years he has felt very proud of it as it has his name on it.
I will add one more that I really used and will use with my next one. A baby carrier/pack. A Snugli holds up very well.

This book is a must read for any woman trying to get pregnant. I was devastated and so was my husband after being told by my fertility specialist at age 38 that I had no option but to consider adoption or donor eggs (according to my doctor I was out of eggs and gave me 4% chance of getting pregnant and a 2% chance of carrying a baby to full term). After much research and dozens of hours reading infertility related articles and posts online, I have found this book! I never believed in anything alternative to western medicine and thought all the other stuff like Chinese medicine was a hoax. But I was soon glad to be wrong as I followed step by step guidelines. After one month of trying I became pregnant and had a beautiful healthy boy. Nine months after that I did everything in the book again and after 2 months of trying I got pregnant again and gave birth to another perfect little boy. I would recommend anyone with an open mind to read this book. It just might be the answer to your prayers.

Don't buy any clothes, because they grow so fast, they never get to wear it all. Try buying some baby products like bum cream or wet wipes. That goes really fast and it's needed everyday! Also if she's not breastfeeding you can ask if you can buy some of the feeding bottles, because you need to change the top parts as the baby grows, it's got different hole sizes for the flow.

The best gifts are vouchers - not original I know but with all the kit being so expensive vouchers are a great way to reduce the pinch of kitting out the baby with everything it needs. Failing that, Premium bonds are somethign they'll always remember you for

The very best thing you could give is a couple of hours of your time, to look after the baby and the older one while Mum has a rest! It's so tiring, especially with your second child, that she'll love you for it!

Maybe you shoul ask your friend if htere is something she wants. If there is nothing particular she wants, I think, silver spoon will be a very good present, because you friend must already got most things a baby needs on baby shower.

To be honest you tend to get loads of people buying clothes and cute teddies etc. Maybe buy something for the mum like nice bath stuff as she'll be knackered and probably appreciate the thought for her. Also maybe for the older brother/sister as they're likely to be feeling left out. This shows you've thought about all of them
