A: There's a clue here. Think of the clouds that give you a good stormy downpour, and the clouds that just give you that fine 'nuisance' rain for a few hours. Would you agree that thunder clouds are darker than drizzle clouds?
It's to do with the size of the rain drops. Fluffy white clouds have tiny little drops that stay where they are - and scatter the light around. However, as the drop's size increases (and it becomes more likely to fall out of the sky), it absorbs more light. That's why storm clouds look darker - the big drops in rain clouds absorb more light and reflect less.

Well, it has to do with the downdraft and the moisture content at the surface. Usually, if the surface is very moist, the chances are, you will see gray skies. If it's dry, but a lot of upper level dynamics, then the storms will remina mostly mid level with the base above ground level. Also, the downdraft also causes the cloud tops to lower, thus creating expanding, greyer and draker clouds at the surface. Also, the temp has a lot to do with it also. If there's a downdraft ocurng, the surface will cool, thus froming a stratus block at the base of the storm.

They appear grey due to the fact that the sun doesn't shine on the bottom of the cloud, and so in actuality you are seeing a shaded version of the clouds.

They become more dense. The grey comes from the light being blocked.
