The Rascals also known as the Young Rascals were a band that only had one or two hits in UK but were massive in States, great soulful style band a 1000 times better than The Beatles.

Gene.
I haven't (embarrassingly) had a chance to listen to most of their stuff, but I went to school with the guitarist and can vouch for his excellent guitar skills.
I did buy (and loved) the album that he produced as a schoolboy, and sold to his friends. Great song-writing skills considering he was 17.
In my experience though, unless your in the know, the good stuff does rise to the top, eventually. But not all the things that float on the surface are safe to swim in.
I have had more pleasure going back to the early stuff of people I like, or just missed because of my age.
Although talent usually makes it, their best years are sometimes overlooked.

My top tip would be to check out emusic.com, its a download site thats much cheaper than all the others and only features indie labels.
You get quite a few free downloads at the start too. And yep, you're right, there is loads of undiscovered stuff on there that's much better than more mainstream stuff. I'd recommend the New Pornographers, The Decemberists & The Frames to start you off.

Depends on what you are into - If you like more rock stuff, AFI is a great pick. However, if you are looking for slightly more unknown bands Say Anything is really good, and there is one called Rinoscerous (French), but I can't spell the name right because of accents. Both have an original sound, and recently Say Anything have had one of their songs on the air (it took the radio forever to recognize it). Hope I helped, good luck finding some good stuff!

The living end I am not sure how famous outside Australia they are but they are brilliant and diverse and go through alot of tpes of rock (best at the songs with powerhouse choruses) and the guitar solos are as good as you will ever find
