I realize it's getting too hot. Is it because i'm a smoker, and have smoked near this pc for about a year, or could there be another reason?
Is this a really serious problem, or , is that what it's supposed to do---i'm a little worried...What should i do?

You'll probably find ....
There's a build-up of dust and debris on the heat-sink and fan ... this is fairly normal in a home environment ...
Turn everything off and unplug it ... take the side panel off and check for dust and other foreign matter ... sweep with a soft brush or gently blow any dust out
If you're super careful you can even vacuum but I don't recommend this
Another problem could be that the thermal grease between the processor and heat-sink is drying out ... this can be replaced ... but if you're not sure what it is you're doing get a specialist to do it for you
Good Luck

i have a dell xp i bought in June of '06 and about a month ago I started having problems with it just shutting off randomly. the power light would flash orange/amber. Needless to say after about 12 hours off and on the phone with dell trying to trouble shoot it and getting a new modem, the repair tech came with new memory cards to try and fix the problem. As soon as he saw the flashing amber he said it is a power problem and diagnosed the fan not running immediately. The comp. was protecting itself by shutting down because of over heating. he replaced the fan motor/fan system and it has been fine since. So i don't know what your problem is but if this starts happening to yours it might be the same problem.

Fans on may PC's these days are thermostatically controlled, and speed up when the processor get hotter. Your computer may be doing work extra work when the fan starts running faster, but it's also possible that dust, and cigarette smoke and tar have reduced the efficiency the fan and processor's heat sink. Try cleaning your computer's fan and heat sink with some compressed air.

Possible an increase in tempture. You may have clogged your cpu fan. If you have not done so it maybe a good time to clean the heatsink on your processor, your fans and the inside of your case.
