Dragonflamer71 must be gay since he/she is so threatened by "the gays." Your probably ugly so I wouldn't worry about anyone (man or woman) being attracted to you. Inbred and ignorant.

Is the cost of living too high compared to what? Compared to New York, then no, but compared to Mexico, then yes. You can expect to pay 700 to 900 for a apartment in a nice area and maybe 500 to 600 in a ghetto area. Crime is really bad in some parts of Houston, so if you are single, the better areas would be best for you. You need a car to live in Houston. There is bus service, but Houston is very spread out and most people have a car. Jobs are available everywhere from minimum wage (around 6 dollars per hour) and up. Depending on the type of education you are getting, and the kind of university you want to go to, I recommend that you check out Sam Houston State University about 60 miles north of Houston in Huntsville where the cost of living is much cheaper and it is a safer place to live. Apartments are around 300 to 400 per month and it is easy to find someone who wants a roommate to share expenses. SHSU has a great criminal justice department (the best in the country) and also a great theater dept and others. The Texas Department of Corrections offers great job opportunities and pays well. Lots of college students work for the prison system and go to school at the same time. And since it is a small town with a large university, most businesses will work your schedule around your classes since they are used to hiring college students. In Houston, I would say you could not live for less than 2000 to 3000 a month and in Huntsville probably half that or 1000 to 2000 a month. Good Luck.

Huntsville native.

Houston, TX is a great place to live. Depending on what school you plan on attending will determine what area you should live in.

LIVING:
I live in NW Houston where renting an apartment can range from $400 to $1,200+. I am currently enrolled at University of Houston-Downtown, and I ride the metro (our public transportation) to school. That saves me a lot of money on gas, car maintenance, etc.

Galleria / Inner Loop / Downtown – generally more expensive than surrounding areas
North / Northwest / Northeast – more affordable living, but can be expensive
South / Southwest / Southeast – a little on the unsafe side depending on the area

LIFE:
Downtown and the Rice Village areas are great once you turn 21. There are plenty of places all over Houston ranging from hole-in-the-wall bars, clubs, etc.

JOBS:
There are plenty of jobs available. Need a good, well written resume. Word of mouth – make sure you ask and tell people you’re looking for a job. You’ll eventually run into someone who can hook you up.

um, tx is a pretty cheap state. Things are way cheaper here than lots of other places around the U.S....

jobs=good/great
costs=low
apartments=plenty but choose carefully
crime=rising
pollution=bad on some days but not all
industries=booming
traffic=awful
life=night/day=good/great
education=become a resident fast for better tuition!
Sports (ALL)=excellent (soccer, basketball, football, baseball...)

and not to be rude or anything but the gays live in montrose, a part of houston. I don't mind montrose...I don't care...they can do and live whatever they want...

many ordinary working people live on the northwest side of hou, spring/woodlands, or sugarland/katy.

for schools there are:
University of Houston
Sam Houston (huntsville, 75 mi or about 1.5-2 hr away from downtown hou)
Rice University
North Harris/Montgomery/Tomball College system
texas a&m in bryan college station, more than 3 hours away from downtown hou
a few expensive law schools
and plenty more.

There are a lot of jobs here. I work in Human Resources for a large company in Houston I participate in several job fairs every month a there are lot of employeers hiring. There are also several Jr. Colleges and 5 Colleges/Univesities in the Houston area. Cost of living is low compared to almost any Mid to large sized city. There are also several major medical centers for world class health care.

Hey,
I do not understand peoples negative attitude about Houston, We moved from Kazakhstan to Houston. Yes, it's different... but I don't see the single place in the world where everything would be perfect. There are always be good and bad sides... Good luck to you...

C.O.L. is not high there are apartments in decent areas that go for 500 or so. Since you are out of state thats gonna cost you the first year at least twice as much as in state tuition. minumum is 5.90 but most places start ar 6.50. you might need a roommate. Life is blah in other words normal, peaceful, safe almost anywhere

Best of luck

Do you really need to ask this?

Everyone who evacuated from New Orleans and ended up in Texas, and didn't have a job to go back to is STILL IN HOUSTON.

Rent is high (too many people), jobs are scarce (too many applicants), everything costs a lot (demand), life sucks (more crime than ever before).

I wouldn't do it right now. Maybe in another couple of years Houston will be okay. Or maybe not. I'd find someplace else.

good move. lowest cost of living of the ten largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. great city (i moved here from washington d.c. several years ago). rice university is world class. univ of houston is a decent school with lots of academic programs. assuming you have a roommate and live close to campus, you should be able to live modestly for about 2K a month
